Sogrape Vinhos was judged to be the world’s best wine producer in 2016, thus repeating its 2015 award from the World Association of Wine Writers and Journalists (WAWWJ).
“The first time we won this award, it was a very memorable surprise, but to be honoured for the second time in a row brings us even greater joy! The fact that we have twice been elected the world’s best wine company confirms the high levels of international recognition for Sogrape’s outstanding performance and for the consistently high quality of its wines. This recognition is thoroughly deserved and serves to consolidate our position as the benchmark for top quality Iberian wines,” added Fernando da Cunha Guedes, CEO of Sogrape.
Being number 1 in the prestigious Top 100 ranking of wine producers worldwide, created by WAWWJ, is even more notable given its very strict criteria involving the evaluation of awards won by each producer in a select set of international competitions throughout the year.
The same association also distinguished Sandeman Tawny Porto 40 Years Old, making it the best classified Portuguese wine in the world ranking. Sogrape Vinhos nowadays forms part of a group that extends as far as Spain, Argentina, Chile and New Zealand, producing strong brands such as Mateus, Gazela, Sandeman and Casa Ferreirinha. It produces wines from the main Portuguese wine regions and sells them in over 120 markets, thus fulfilling its mission to be a family-run Portuguese company (dating back to the Second World War) with truly global reach.
Sogrape Vinhos was founded in 1942 by Fernando van Zeller Guedes, with the ambition of making Portuguese wines known throughout the world and a long-term vision based on the marketing of quality wines, the importance of new brands and their presentation.
Today, led by the third generation of the founding family, Sogrape Vinhos is ever more closely dedicated to meeting its founding objective: to be a family-run company with an international outlook focused on producing wines of quality and innovation with the development of Portuguese brands globally.
Sogrape Vinhos is proprietor of about 830 hectares of vineyards in Portugal.
